small flowers (2018)
small flowers (2018) is written in memory of my dear friend, James Arthur Kirk (1941-2014).
The piece is a timbre mirage between recorders and 3 recorder-like sounds: bowed marimba, violin and cello played at the octave node, and double bass harmonics. Shifting harmonies are created through the incremental descent of recorders playing “forked” fingerings, altering pitch and colour. The string and marimba sounds are perhaps more unstable, hooting and wheezing tenderly like long-forgotten organ pipes.
